Ecuador's Seymour Airport on Baltra Island is undergoing a significant overhaul aimed at enhancing tourism in the Galapagos Islands. The modifications are part of a newly amended concession agreement with Corporación América Airports (CAAP) and its subsidiary, Aeropuertos Ecológicos de Galapagos SA (Ecogal). This initiative seeks to improve operational efficiency in response to challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic that severely impacted the travel sector.
The changes instituted in the agreement will stabilize economic operations at the airport while supporting the anticipated recovery of the local tourism market. Key updates include an increase in passenger tariffs, an extension of the concession period, and a dedicated investment plan for infrastructure improvements.
Key Changes in the Agreement
- Concession Duration: The concession period has been extended by six years, now set to expire on December 31, 2032.
- Passenger Tariffs: The Terminal Use Charge (TUC) will increase by $5.20, raising the total fee to $31.18 per passenger.
- Runway Assessment: A technical evaluation of the runway will occur in 2029, with potential repaving work in 2031, subject to a maximum budget of $4 million.
Sustainable Operations Emphasis
The revised concession reflects a commitment to sustainability essential for maintaining the Galapagos Islands' UNESCO World Heritage status. Seymour Airport has been carbon-neutral since 2017 and aims to remain environmentally friendly. This agreement includes certification under the Airport Carbon Accreditation program at Level 4+.
Regular economic and financial reviews will occur every two years to ensure operational resilience against unforeseen challenges, further enhancing tourism stability. These upgrades are expected to improve the region’s tourism infrastructure, increasing access to the unique wildlife and ecosystems of the Galapagos Islands as travel continues to recover.
